Sian the Choreographer

Who is the choreographer and what do they do?

The job of the choreographer is to create and teach dances for any scenes in the play that need them, by working with the director's vision of the play and with the composer's music. At the Globe, there is also a special traditional dance at the end of every performance known as 'the jig' and so choreographers at the Globe also plan what that will look like. On this production of Romeo and Juliet, the choreographer was SIAN WILLIAMS. We asked Sîan:

- how she begins to choreograph the dances for a production;

- what happens in rehearsals;

- what a jig is, and where they come from;

- if the Globe was easier or harder to choreograph for;

- how she got into choreography.
